The Vista machine can see the printer, and even open the status box, yet any attempt to "connect" or actually print a document ends up with the "Windows cannot connect to this printer. Access is denied" Many hours now spent on this rascal so will appreciate any help Mike.

I note that you implied an access denied error when calling GetPrinter() with any desired access other than an admistrative type. The call to GetPrinter() that is blowing up is just the preliminary one that determines how much memory is required to contain a level 2 printer information structure.
